Effective Study Techniques for Terminal Examinations

When it comes to studying, consistency and technique are far more important than the number of hours spent cramming the night before an exam. Research shows that passive reading is one of the least effective ways to retain information. Instead, students should focus on active learning strategies.

Here are four proven study techniques to help you excel in your upcoming terminal examinations at Holyland Academy.

1. Active Recall Instead of just reading a chapter over and over, close the book and try to write down or explain everything you can remember. Testing yourself forces your brain to retrieve the information, which strengthens memory pathways. You can do this by using flashcards or creating quick self-quizzes.

2. Spaced Repetition Do not try to learn everything in a single day. Reviewing a concept multiple times over spaced intervals (e.g., 1 day later, 3 days later, a week later) is highly effective for moving information from short-term to long-term memory. Plan your study schedule at least 2-3 weeks in advance.

3. The Feynman Technique This technique involves explaining a complex concept in simple terms, as if you were teaching it to a child. If you struggle to simplify the explanation, it indicates a gap in your understanding. Go back to your notes and focus on those specific gaps.

4. Optimize Your Environment Find a quiet, well-lit space free from distractions (especially mobile phones). Follow a study routine that includes short, 25-minute focused blocks followed by 5-minute breaks (the Pomodoro Technique).

Good luck with your exam preparations! Remember, disciplined preparation leads to confidence and success.
